Why Klarinbox

Three reasons, in this order.

  • Nothing is sent

    An email is a firm's confidential matter, an employee's file, someone's private life. The file is read by your browser, in this tab, and the page may not reach any other site (connect-src 'self'): the browser enforces it. Remote images in a message are not loaded, as they would tell the sender it was read.

  • Faithful and traceable

    The message is displayed, not rewritten: the full header, the body as it was sent, without its remote images (loading them would alert the sender), each attachment with its name and size. An extracted attachment keeps its original name, and the archive index gives its SHA-256 fingerprint, which links it to the message it came from.

  • Ready for the case file

    The attachments of twenty messages come out in one archive, one folder per message, with their index. An exchange can be filed without saving each attachment by hand.

How it works

Three steps, and none of them leaves your machine.

  1. Drop the message

    A .msg, .eml, .emlx or winmail.dat, dragged onto the page. It is read by your browser and lives in the tab's memory.

  2. Read it

    Header, body, attachments, and attached messages, which open in turn. The technical headers are one click away.

  3. Save what it holds

    One attachment, or all of them in an archive. The files go from the tab's memory to your disk, and that is all that moves.

What it does not do

What is worth knowing before using it.

  • It is not an email client. No account, no connection to a mailbox, no sending: it opens files.
  • Klarinbox does not certify that an email is authentic. It shows what the file contains and points out what looks inconsistent; it replaces neither a bailiff's report nor an expert examination.
  • An encrypted message is not decrypted (S/MIME, PGP), and a signature is not verified.
  • Whole mailboxes are not read here. A .pst, .ost or mbox gathers thousands of messages; this site opens message files.
  • Everything fits in the tab's memory. A message of several hundred megabytes may exceed what a browser grants a page.
  • Klarinbox is not affiliated with Microsoft, Meta or Google. Outlook refers here to the files that software produces.
